Certificate of freedom was recorded on 9 December I 817. Document states that bearer, Charles Johnson, "is a man of color and has proved himself a free man from testimony which said Johnson has adduced and also by affidavit of Mr. John Haycock, a respectable white man and resident of Fairfax Co., Virginia." The Justice of the Peace states that he has no hesitancy in giving this certificate. Charles Johnson is described as a thin spare man age about 28 or 29, nearly 5 ' and 11" high, and a mild, modest and well behaved Negro. Signed on 30 June 1815 by James M. Varnum, [Justice of the Peace, for Washington Co., DC]. ln the left margin of the handwritten Liber the following is written: "Exd [Examined] and deld [delivered] June 6 th 1821"
