Abstract

Chattel deed was recorded on 3 January 1820. Richard H. Fitzhugh is indebted to the Farmers and Merchants Bank of George Town for $4,300, to the Bank of Columbia for $2,850, to the Union Bank of George Town for $1,550 and to the Branch Bank of the United States at Washington for $7,000. To insure payment of these debts, Richard H. Fitzhugh executed this chattel deed and, for $5.00, sells in trust to William Marbury all the stock of goods and merchandise now in his [Fitzhugh 's] store on Bridge Street [Now M Street, NW] in George Town, and all of his household furniture, goods and chattels in the house situated on l st Street [now N Street, NW] in Georgetown. In addition, Richard Fitzhugh conveys, a Negro woman named Maria, a Negro woman named Cloe and her children Westly, Caroline, John and Nance, all of whom are now in his possession, as well as all his books of accounts, notes, bonds and other securities "to William Marbury in trust to sell to the best of his judgment and discretion and to divide [the] money in proportion to the respective amounts owed to the banks and then to the [other] creditors of Richard H.
