Abstract

Manumission was recorded on 31 May 1805. Francis Lowndes of Montgomery Co., Maryland sets free Semus Thompson, a woman purchased from Middleton Belt, "...from this day forward to act for herself as a free woman." Signed and sealed on 20 December 1800. [Compiler ' s note: The following statement by Francis Lowndes is written under the above entry] "As appears by the above instrument of writing I intended thereby to have manumitted according to law the therein named Semus Thompson on the 20th day of December 1800 which instrument of writing for the purpose aforesaid. I am advised is invalid and inoperable for want of certain legal requisites it therefore becoming necessary to effect my intentions to execute another. I, Francis Lowndes of Washington Co., District of Columbia do set free Semus Thompson in consideration of $230, a woman about the age of 44 years and able to work and gain sufficient livelihood and maintenance to be free from the 20th day of December 1800 and that further I do grant and release unto said Semus Thompson all property of whatever kind she may have acquired from the said 20 December 1800 to her, her executors, administrators and assigns against me and mine and all claims whatsoever.
