Summary

Joseph W. Williford is $900 in debt to Sariah Williford. In this contract she gives up this debt. The court puts in trust slaves Tom, age 30, and Hatty, age 45, along with “four beds and furniture”. Tom and Hatty and the furniture are in Joseph Williford’s possession. Jos. B. Nickolls (?) is appointed Trustee, and is directed to allow Joseph to “have use, occupy and enjoy said negroes and beds” during his life. If Joseph Williford should die, the same provisions pass to his wife Patsy, and if both of them are dead, the provisions pass to any living children, and so on. If Joseph dies, this trust passes to executor of his estate, with duty to appoint a new Trustee. I’m puzzled why Sariah would want such an arrangement, with title to the slaves never coming back to her, but she signed the document. Transcribed by David Domelsmith August 3, 2022.
