This indenture and writing made this twenty third day of July in the year of Christ one thousand eighteen hundred and twenty four between Sihon Tatum of the county of Guilford and state of North Carolina of the one part Samuel Hunter of the county and state aforesaid of the other part witnesseth that the said Sihon Tatum being indebted to Levi Ross of the county of Guilford and state aforesaid the sum of fifty six dollars and fifty cents by bond bearing date the 23rd day of July 1824 due and payable the twenty third day of December next and being desirous of securing to the said Levi Ross the said sum of money together with the further consideration of one dollars to him in hand paid by the said Samuel Hunter the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged by sd. Sihon Tatum have bargained and sold and by these presents doth bargain and sell alien and confer unto the said Samuel Hunter one negro boy slave by the name of John aged eleven years to have and to hold the above bargained and sold negro boy slave John to the sd. Samuel Hunter his heirs and representatives forever and the said Sihon Tatum for himself his heirs and representatives doth hereby warrant and defend the title interest and claim to the said negro boy slave John to the sd. Samuel Hunter his heirs and representatives forever but the said Samuel Hunter is to have and to hold the aforesaid negro slave John for the special trust and confidence however that whenever he the said Samuel Hunter shall after the 23rd of December next be requested either by the sd. Levi Ross or by the sd. Sihon Tatum to make the aforesaid sum or sums of money which may be due and owing from the said Sihon Tatum to said Levi Ross at the time such request shall be made that he the sd. Samuel Hunter after ten days public notice shall expose to public sale the aforesaid negro slave John to the highest bidder for ready money having first advertised the time and place of sale in at least three public places in the neighborhood in the county aforesaid and after having sold the same to the highest and last bidder he the said Samuel Hunter shall pay over the proceeds of such sale to the sd. Levi Ross in satisfaction of his debt aforesaid and in satisfaction of all or any other debts dues or demands which the said Sihon Tatum may justify owe to the said Levi Ross (as aforesaid) at or before the sale aforesaid and the balance of any shall be paid by the said Samuel Hunter to the sd. Sihon Tatum after deducting all expenses of caring this deed into effect and if the proceeds of sale shall not be sufficient in amount to satisfy the said debts dues or demands then the sd. Samuel Hunter shall give to the said Sihon Tatum. Credit against the said debts dues or demands to the amount of the proceeds of the said sale. In testimony whereof the said Sihon Tatum hath hereunto set his hand and seal the day and date above written signed, sealed and delivered.
