William Armfield Sheriff Bill of Sale to Andrew Lindsay. State of North Carolina, Guilford County. Whereas by virtue five writs of venidsioni exponus issued by the clerk of the court of pleas and quarter sessions of the county of Guilford and state aforesaid directed and delivered to the sheriff of the county aforesaid and tested the third Monday of November 1821. Commanding him to sell certain Negro slaves therein mentioned the property of Herbert Peeplees (deceased) in said county to satisfy aforesaid five writs of vendisioni expones amounting to six hundred and fifty eight dollars and twenty nine cents with interest and cost which said sum was recovered by Jonathan Waddlington, Bethel Waddlington, Brandon and Wilson and others of the said Herbert Peeplees administrators as on record may for certain debts and that the said Sheriff should have the said moneys before the worshipful the justices of said county at the next court to be held for said county on the third Monday of February 1822 to render unto the said Jonathan Waddlington, Bethel Waddlington, Brandon and Wilson and debts and interest aforesaid whereof the said Herbert Peeplees administrators was convicted. Now I, William Armfield, high sheriff of the county of Guilford in pursuance and virtue of my office and the aforesaid writs of vendisioni exponus did sieze and take into my hand and custody a certain family of negroes namely Jerry, Amy, Dorcus, and Ann the property of the said Herbert Peeplees (deceased) and on the 29th day of November 1821 and sold two of the said negros namely Dorcus and Ann to Andrew Lindsay of the county and state aforesaid being the highest and last bidder at and for price of two hundred and twenty three dollars for the negro girl Dorcus and two hundred and one dollars and fifty cents for the said negro girl Ann. Now know all men by these presents that I the said William Armfield high sheriff as aforesaid for and in consideration of the aforesaid sums of two hundred and twenty three dollars for the said girl Dorcus and two hundred and one dollars and fifty cents for the said girl Ann to me in hand paid by the said Andrew Lindsay at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have bargained sold and delivered and by these presents do bargain, sell and deliver unto the said Andrew Lindsay the above mentioned two negroe girls namely Dorcus and Ann to have and to hold the said two negroe girls that is to say, Dorcus and Ann unto the said Andrew Lindsay his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns to his and their own proper use and behoof forever and I, William Armfield, Sheriff, as aforesaid my heirs, executors, administrators and assigns from and against all person or persons whomsoever shall and will warrant and forever, defend by these presents so far as my office of sheriff will admit and no further in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal all Greensboro the 20th day of May A.D. 1823 signed, sealed and delivered in presents of
