John Elms is Security on a $1040 loan to Johnson Ledbetter from the State Bank of NC. Apparently Elms is now liable for that amount. In this document, Elms places in Trust with Benjamin Burgin, Sr. a 150 acre plot of land, “…Also a negro boy named Tom about seven years of age…”, livestock, crops, etc. If Elms does not pay the $1040 debt before October 1, 1843, Trustee Burgin is authorized to sell Tom and the other “property” to make payment.
