DOBBS COUNTY, ss. By HENRY GOODMAN and ROBERT WHITE, Esquires, Two of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for said County. WHEREAS Complaint hath been made this Day to us, by John Court, that a Negro Man named CHARLES, about 20 Years old, Country born, a short, thick, well set Fellow, and of a black Complexion, hath absented himself from his said Master, and is supposed to be lurking about, comitting many Acts of Felony in this Province. THESE are therefore in his Majesty's Name, to command the said Slave forthwith to surrener himself, and return home to his said Master. And we do also require the Sheriff of the said County of Dobbs, to make diligent Search after the said Slave, and him having found, to apprehend and secure, so that he may be conveyed to his sai Master, or otherwise discharged as the Law directs; and the said Sheriff is hereby impowered to raise and take with him such Power of his County as he may think fit for apprehending the said outlying Slave. And we do hereby further, by Virture of an Act of Assembly concerning Servants and Slaves, inimate and declare, if the said Charles doth not surrender himself, and return home, immediately after the Publication these Presents, that then any Person or Persons may kill or destroy the siad Slave, by such Means as he or they shall think fit, without Accusation or Impeachment of any Crime or Offence for so doing, or without incurring any Penalty or Forfeiture thereby. GIVEN under our Hands and Seals, this 29th Day of April, 1775, and in the 15th Year of his Majesty's Reign. HENRY GOODMAN, ROBERT WHITE. N.B. Whoever takes up the said Slave, and brings him home, shall receive a Reward of Twenty Shillings, and Five Pounds for killing him.
