Petition #11184604

St. Louis County jailer explains that two runaway slaves--Edward Ellsey and William Anderson--were committed to his jail in 1843 and kept there for a considerable period until they were sold at auction. Anderson, for example, remained incarcerated 478 days. The jailer asks for reimbursement of expenses over and above the amount brought in when the two were sold.

Result: Referred to committee.
