Petition #11683004

Abstract

William Strother, a free man of color, represents that he was manumitted by George Carpenter of Rockingham County. He further states that "prior to his emancipation he intermarried with a Slave now the property of Col Kenney, that his wife is a family Servant, and cannot be purchased." Averring that his said wife "is upwards of 60 years of age," the petitioner prays that he "may be permitted to remain in the county of Rockingham." He further notes that "if it should be deemed inconsistent with the policy of the Government to Permit him to remain for life He humbly begs 4 or 5 years when in all probability his aged wife may sink into the Grave, when your petitioner can say I have no wife no child no father no mother and will fell in duty Bound to depart in Peace."
