Petition #20881451

Abstract

Henry Mercier, a master cooper, asks the court to order posting of the notices required to free his mulatto slave, a thirty-seven-year old woman named Celeste. Mercier presents that his petition is filed "conformably to the condition on which he had purchased" Celeste from his previous owner, Louise Elizabeth Leroy, widow of the late Nicolas Deverbois. In the bill of sale, the widow Deverbois had vouched that Celeste, daughter of her late slave Eulalie, was born in her house, that she had always been of good character ["un bon sujet"] and loyal. Similarly, in his petition, Mercier vouches that Celeste has always been of "honest conduct" and never tried to run away.
