Abstract
David C. Griffing, of the county of Clairborne in Mississippi, seeks compensation for the slaying of his slave named Bob. Griffing represents that two slaves belonging to Stephen M. Routh “willfully, wantonly, carelessly and cruelly," and "mortally wounded” Bob with a weapon called a “broad-sword.” Griffing contends that Bob was murdered without cause and his death is attributable to “wantonness, negligence and imprudence.” He prays that the court will hold Routh liable for $1,500, the value of his slave, plus $10 per month for the loss of his slave’s services.
Result: Partially granted; motion for new trial; overruled; appealed; affirmed.
