Rose Matthews died in June 1820. In her will, she bequeathed three slaves--Frederick, Daniel, and Rose--in trust to William D. Merrick "to aid in the education" of her sons. Her sons allege that Merrick "wholly appropriated them to his own use." Francis, Charles, William, and Thomas Matthews, along with Thomas's next friend, George Matthews, ask the court to subpoena Merrick "to account for the manner in which the said Trust fund was disposed" and to award them whatever money is due them.
