Petition #20984517

Abstract

Robert Jameson asks the court to grant an injunction prohibiting John Talbert and Octavius C. Harris from any further action regarding slaves in the estate of Nathaniel T. Rantin while an 1841 suit Talbert brought against Jameson is still pending. Jameson states that Talbert has removed three of the slaves to the District of Columbia and that he threatens to move three more "clandestinely in the night time for the purpose of selling them to a dealer in slaves." Jameson claims that Talbert has already contracted with a purchaser, and if the transaction takes place, the slaves will "become slaves for life" in parts unknown, contrary to the wishes of their deceased owner. He charges Octavius Harris with aiding and abetting Talbert, since, by virtue of earlier court proceedings, he is under the obligation to deliver the slaves to Jameson "on demand." He also asks the court to appoint a receiver to take possession and charge of the slave until a decision in the case is rendered.

Result: Partially granted.
