Petition #20985117

Abstract

Laura L. B. Hutchins asks the court to require Martha B. Fowler and Hope H. Slatter to give an account concerning slaves that were held in trust for Hutchins by Fowler. The petitioner states that Tench Tilghman conveyed five slaves to Fowler to hold in trust for her until she reached the age of twenty-one. Hutchins alleges, however, that Fowler has violated the trust agreement and sold four of the slaves to Hope H. Slatter, who, in turn, has sold the slaves outside the limits of the state. Hutchins explains that Slatter was aware at the time of purchase that the slaves were part of her trust estate. She asks the court to grant her possession of the slaves or to compel Fowler and Slatter to compensate her for the value of the slaves, their increase, and their hires and profits during the period they were held in trust for her.

Result: Granted.
