Petition #20985961

Abstract

Robert Carr states that in March 1859, William Gaugh, "a free colored boy, orphan" living in Baltimore City, was indentured to him as an apprentice for a term of service set to expire when Gaugh reached his majority. Carr intended for Gaugh to work as a farm hand on his farm in Anne Arundel County. Gaugh was only on the farm a few weeks when he ran away and was apprehended in Baltimore. He repeated this behavior and now Carr "finds it unsafe to trust him again as a farm hand until your Honors have extended his term and thus shown him the consequence of such improper conduct on his part." Carr asks that Gaugh's term of service be extended "as may be right and proper."
