Mary Waits seeks the delivery of and compensation for a slave. The petitioner represents that she "purchased a man slave named Jim" at the estate sale of her late husband, William Waits. In the early part of 1846, the "said slave ranaway from her and went to the house of her son Benjamin Waits." Benjamin assumed possession of the slave and "converted him to his own use." Mary, by her agent Silas K. Waits, has demanded the return of Jim on several occasions. The petitioner asserts, however, that Benjamin refuses to deliver the slave, pretending that Mary is indebted to him. Mary Waits requests the court's assistance in procuring the delivery of Jim and payment for his "hire and use" while in the hands of her son.
