"Being satisfied that a deliberate fraud has been practiced on your orator," John H. Smith petitions the court to compel tobacco manufacturers Pleasant and John Labby to refund the six hundred dollars he paid for the slave Squire Lacy, a forty-five-year-old waterman who worked on the James River. When he purchased Lacy, Smith was assured that the slave had only "a cold or had a fit of the Colick & that his sickness was more feigned than real." In fact, Lacy suffered from asthma and died a short time after the purchase.
Result: Dismissed.
