- Petersburg City, Virginia. July 5, 1832. - July 6, 1832.
- Court: Circuit Superior
- Salutation: To the Honble John F. May - Judge of the Circuit Superior Court of Law & Chancery for the Town of Petersburg
Abstract
Mary L. Parish died in 1828, bequeathing six slaves their freedom if they emigrated to Liberia within one year. Parish, having a joint interest in three other slaves, including Lucy, offered them the same terms for manumission, provided the other tenants in common, Mary's siblings, agreed to allow the estate to purchase their interests. Lucy is now about to be sold to pay Parish's debts. She informs the court that she "was an obedient, faithful & honest slave to her said Mistress; was her waiting Maid for many years." She seeks an injunction to halt the sale until the court can decide her right to freedom.
Result: Granted.
