Abstract

Eliza Parham, a free woman of color, seeks a divorce from her husband, George Parham, a free man of color. The petitioner charges that her husband "deserted & abandoned her & her children & left the state of Virginia." Attesting that she was "a good & virtuous wife ... & never gave him any cause of offense whatever," she confesses that "he was frequently cruel & unkind to her." She therefore prays "that your Honor will annul the marriage between him & herself & divorce her from his bed & board & will give her the care custody & maintenance of her said children."

Result: Granted.
