Slaves of the late Dr. Littleton W. T. Land petition for their freedom. They recount that the said Land by his will "emancipated your orators and oratrixes and made us his sole legatees & devisees." They further note that a codicil to his will directed that they "should be hired out" if "his estate should be insufficient to defray the expenses of your orators and oratrixes to Liberia or a free state." They contend "that a sufficient sum has been raised by hiring them out ... and that your orators and oratrixes are held in bondage and treated as slaves by the said John J. Burroughs," Land's executor. Pointing out that the court gave them leave "to sue in forma pauperis," the petitioners pray that the said Burroughs "may be compelled to execute such deeds and other writings as may be necessary in order to give your orators and oratrixes a complete and perfect title to their freedom." Correspondence from W. Starr to John J. Burroughs contains details on the American Colonization Society's operations and its expenses in sending freed slaves to Liberia
