Robert B. Winfree, guardian of his minor nephew, Robert Hatcher, seeks permission to sell Hatcher's slave named Eliza, who has "become so refractory that every place he has hired her to she has runaway." He fears that if he continues to hire her out, she "will prove a total loss to his ward." He therefore contends that "it would be decidedly to his interest to sell her and invest the proceeds as the court may direct." Winfree assures the court that Hatcher, who has now attained the age of 18 years, "fully concurs in this statement."
