Abstract

At the request of Benjamin Posey the bill of sale [referred to as a deed] was recorded on 28 September 1801. The indenture was made 5 September 1801 between Lanta Maddox of Washington Co., District of Columbia and Benjamin Posey of Charles Co., Maryland. "Whereas William R. Maddox, George Sesson, Samuel Speake and John Woodward has at the special request of Lanta Maddox entered into a recognizance to the United States for the personal appearance of Lanta Maddox at the next court and whereas Lanta Maddox is desirous to secure and indemnify the said recognizors, that in consideration of the foregoing plus five pounds from Benjamin Posey, Lanta Maddox sells Negro Man Harry age about 22 years... and from sale thereof pay and satisfy the said William Maddox, George Sesson, Samuel Speake, and John Woodward." [Compiler's note: It appears that the four men mentioned put up bond to ensure Lanta Maddox's appearance in court and that Harry was sold to reimburse these four men for the bond.]
