Organizing themselves as the "Sons of Benevolence in the town of Newcastle," seven free men of color seek an act of incorporation. They state "they have entered into an association for the purpose of suppressing vice and immorality among their coloured brethern and of inculcating the practice of those virtues, which can alone ameliorate their present condition." They further represent that the group seeks "to create a fund for burying the dead and taking care of the indigent and sick among our coloured brethern." They therefore pray "that an act may be passed ... agreeably to the above petition."
