Abstract
In 1842, John Anderson was shot in the neck by his servant, Thomas Brown, who was tried and convicted of attempted murder. Brown was sentenced to seven years of servitude and was sold to Elijah McDowell of Maryland for $200. After paying costs, the sheriff of Kent County still had $130.19, which he turned over to the State Treasury. Anderson asks the legislature to pass an act authorizing the state to pay him the surplus.
