A group of twenty-nine citizens ask the legislature to approve the emancipation of Limerick, a fifty-year-old slave who paid his master $600 for his freedom. Limerick, the petitioners write, "has ever been a faithful and trusty Slave," and they believe "no injury will arise to the community by means of his legal Emancipation." Among the petitioners is Limerick's owner, Ezekiel Newman.
