Petition #21383404

Abstract

William E. and Adelaide Sledge request that the court appoint a new trustee. In 1828 George Powell established a trust for William Sledge's present and future children, placing in trust the slave woman Mary and her three children and appointing John Kidd to administer the trust for the "sole use & benefit" of Sledge's children. Kidd has since moved to Alabama. The Sledges have no complaint against Kidd but maintain that Powell intended the trustee to remain nearby. Since some of their children are now old enough to receive "an education in proportion to their means," the parents worry that "their children will be deprived of that care and attention and assistance" that they deserve from their trustee. The Sledges ask that the court revoke the terms of the original deed and appoint N. R. Eaves as the new trustee.
