- Court: Petition
- Salutation: To the Hon. the General Assembly of the State of Missouri
Abstract
Ambrose Lewis asks that he and his family be allowed to remain in Missouri. Born free in Petersburg, Virginia, Lewis married a free woman of color, and the couple had five children. By 1846, they had three grandchildren. With the exception of one grandchild, all members of the family had been born in Virginia. By 1844 the entire family was living in Missouri. According to Missouri law, they were required to leave the state because they had not resided there since 1840. Lewis states he had lived in Missouri since 1841 and is "well Known to many of the most respectable Citizens of the City of St. Louis."
