Nicholas Click explains that the late Michael Beam devised in his last will and testament "that a mullato girl named Mary the property of the said deceased should have her freedom"; he also bequeathed her "a legacy of one hundred pounds currency." Named as trustee in said will, Click "prays your honorable body to grant the last will and desire of the said deceased by passing an act to liberate the said Mary."
