Charles Johnson represents that "he has and holds a Certain boy of Colour of about four years of age as a slave, being born as such by the Laws of this Country." He further declares that the child's "white blood so far prevails, that it is almost impossible for any person to discern that he is of mix'd blood." The petitioner, from "principles both of policy and Humanity," therefore prays "that the said boy by the name of Gustavus Adolphus Johnson should be freed & Liberated, and that you will pass a Law for that purpose."
