Petition #11281102

Abstract

Andrew Boyd, "the sole executor of Isaac Lowe decsd for and in behalf of" six slaves that are part of said estate, represents that Lowe manumitted his slaves and that the slaves "twenty one years old and upwards" have procured their freedom. Boyd states, however, that "the strict letter of the law" requires meritorious services as a basis for manumission and as a consequence "the children & those that were young could not be included in the decree of the Court." The petitioner relates that this "renders the condition of those not emancipated the more severe, the small children & younger brothers & sisters are separated from their Parents & near relations & continuing in a state of slavery while the benevolent intentions of their Master has been extended to the elder ones." Noting that Lowe's heirs "have sold their claim to the younger negroes to certain person in the County of Rockingham who were disposed to speculate in this way," Boyd begs leave to "have the benefit of your interposition."
