Seventy-four residents of Bertie County report that "one or more districts in our county has been without a constable for a considerable time and that it is owing to the lowness of the present fees." They therefore pray "that your honourable bodies will pass a special law to increase the fees of constables within the county of Bertie." One of the fee increases listed is: "For whiping a negro by order of Court or by a justice of the Peace -- 0.25."
Result: "ordered" that the prayer be granted.
