Nineteen residents of Bertie County seek compensation for Andrew Northcoatt, whose slave was attacked and killed by two other slaves. They assert that the sheriff of Bertie County retained a security bond of $250 on said slaves Hany and Isaac when they failed to appear in court. The petitioners therefore "pray your Honorable body to pay the Two hundred & fifty dollars (collected by the Sheriff of Bertie as aforesaid) to the said Andrew Northcoatt to indemnify him for the loss he has sustained in the death of his negro man under the circumstances as aforesaid."
Result: Rejected.
