Abstract

John Calvert seeks compensation for two young slaves, Jack and Primas, who were killed in 1779 on Easter Sunday. Calvert recounts that "he was directed to prove some Cannon -- belonging to this State (under the direction of Major Thomas Grimball)" and "in performing of which Business One of the Guns an 18 pounder blew of by Accident and Unfortunately wounded Two young Negroe Men by Name Jack & Primas the property of your Petitioner." He further states that they died the next day "in the General Hospital" and that said "Negroes has been Constantly Employed in the Public Services for upwards of 4 years." He therefore prays that he be granted "such Allowance for the said Negroes as in your wisdom shall seem meet."
