Petition #11382210

Abstract

David Haig represents that he is the owner of two slaves, "who were convicted by the Court of Magistrates & Freeholders ... during the last Summer, of attempting to raise an insurrection among the Persons of color in this State"; the said slaves “are now under Sentence of transportation beyond the limits of the United States." Noting that Nero and Harry, both about thirty-five years old, are "among the best and most experienced workers in their trade (the Coopers)," Haig "feels Satisfied that they could not now be fully replaced to him by the Sum of Eight hundred dollars each." The petitioner prays that he be granted "such compensation, as may in some measure indemnify him for the peculiar and Severe loss he has sustained."
