Petition #11382413

Abstract

On or about 10 August 1822, George Clark formed a patrol and "went in search of horses belonging to negroes, which were liable to condemnation under the Act of Assembly, The Object being most to prevent the danger and horrid consequences of insurrection than any private gain." Clark admits that the party confiscated four horses, "which himself and company had good reason to believe were negro property." He reports, however, that they "were sued for Trespass committed on D. Blake's plantation and for seizing the said horses and damages of Two hundred & twenty dollars were recovered against" them. The petitioner therefore prays "that the money for which the said Horses were sold may be Ordered to be paid to your Petitioner."
