Petition #11382512

Abstract

Sheriff Samuel Cannon seeks reimbursement for $41.20 expended while serving notices and performing other duties in the case of a slave convicted of burglary but spared the death penalty. He recounts that in 1824 a slave named Peter was charged, tried, and convicted of burglary by a court of magistrates and freeholders in Newberry District and sentenced to death. William Calmes, the owner of Peter, immediately gave notice that he would appeal the verdict, and upon application to Judge Abraham Nott, he received "a prohibition," which was later made absolute. Cannon therefore prays "your Honorable body to pay him the said sum of forty one dollars and twenty cents."

Result: Referred to claims committee; laid over.
