Petition #11382604

Abstract

Peter Gourdin seeks compensation for the death of his slave Jack. He explains that Jack was shot by a white man in pursuit of Abner, a slave sentenced to be hanged for highway robbery and who had escaped from jail "before the day of his execution." Gourdin, having "directed three of his most active & confidential servants to make an attempt at retaking Abner," laments that Jack, one of the said three slaves, was thus killed "by one of the white men who were engaged with same purpose, was Either thro agitation or mistake shot by one of the party." The petitioner therefore prays that he may be granted "such remuneration & relief ... as may appear just and proper."
