Abstract

James Ross and Holloway Simmons seek compensation for apprehending a runaway slave, Tom, who was accused of murdering Solomon Coats in 1826. They report that upon "hearing where the said negro was & with a view to advance the cause of justice [they] obtained a warrant & proceeded to Sumter district apprehended the said negro, brought him back to York District where he was tried for the Said offence found guilty & executed." The petitioners aver that they "were employed a week in this service & bore their own expenses." They "therefore pray that proper compensation may be allowed."

Result: Granted, allowed $3 per day for each.
