Petition #11383405

Abstract

Forty residents of Saint Bartholomew's Parish "are desirous not only upon principles of private duty, but of Public Patriotism, of educating their Children in their own State." They admit that there exists "the passion, too common in our Country, of sending our youths to distant Seminaries," but they prefer to establish an academy to educate their children in Walterboro. The petitioners therefore pray that "an act may be passed by your Honorable Body vesting in the Walterboro Academy all the Property which is now Escheated ... in the Parish of Saint Bartholomew." They "especially" request the estate property "of a free Black Woman, named India" be earmarked for their purposes.
