Abstract
"By a Long life of Care and industry," James Paterson, a free person of color, purchased his wife, Sarah, and his two children, George and Mary. Paterson seeks exemption from the law prohibiting the manumission of slaves and requests permission to free his family, "so that the honest industry, the unwearied pains and untiring efforts of a Father & Husband may not be lossed to him entirely."
