Twenty-three members of the Brotherly Association of Charleston, an organization of free persons of color, seek an act of incorporation "with power to hold and possess real and personal estate to the amount of Ten Thousand dollars." The petitioners report that "they have with their contributions purchased a Tract of land in the vicinity of the City of Charleston and laid the same off as a burial ground for themselves and others who may join them."
