Allen Yates of Choctaw County, Alabama, seeks compensation for a runaway slave, Anthony, who absconded in 1846. Anthony was captured by the sheriff of Union District, South Carolina, and sold to William Smith, who now retains possession. Yates argues that he was unaware of the sale and asks for $293.24, plus interest, in compensation--the amount after expenses collected by the sheriff and turned over to the Commissioner of Public Buildings in Union District.
