Petition #11482401

Abstract

The Manumission Society of Tennessee, at its tenth annual convention, presents "the following arguments in favor of the gradual abolition of the slaves in the bounds of our highly favored and otherwise happy state." It proposes three petitions to accomplish said objective: first, "may a free birth be secured by law to all children of color born after a certain date"; second, "may the inhuman seperation of husband and wife be prohibited by Law"; and third, "may the convinced master be permitted to emancipate his effective slaves without involvement." Believing "that in granting the above petitions your honourable [body] will not in any degree overleap the constitution or impair the obligation of contract," the Society is "sure the adoption of these important measures by the enlightened Legislature of Tennessee would have a powerfull and salutary effect on other states of the Union."
