Thirty-five residents of Greene County urge the emancipation of Charles, a slave who purchased his freedom for $350, "a part of which Sum he has already paid." They point out that "owing to an act of the General Assembly passed in the year 1831 prohibiting the emancipating of Slaves Said Charles is depreaved of the benefit of his Contract." The petitioners therefore "pray your Honourable body to pass a law authorising the County Court of Greene to emancipate Said [Charles] by his giving bond with Security to indemnify the County." They further attest "that he is of good marral Charrector."
