One hundred sixty-eight citizens of Franklin County represent that George Gillespie "owned a negro man young and likely, and in the year 1833 he was apprehended, tried and sentenced to be hung and was hung for a high crime committed against the laws of the state." The petitioners state that Gillespie "is old, in moderate circumstances, and dependant on his farm entirely for support; and that the loss of said slave is of a magnitude to affect seriously the means for support of himself and a large family." They therefore pray that Gillespie be compensated "for the loss thus sustained."
