Abstract

Having purchased her freedom, Temperance Crutcher asks permission to remain in Tennessee. She states that she does not wish "to be driven from the home of nativity kindred and friends, to seek a home in the land of Strangers." The petitioner therefore prays "that your honorable body will pass a law, authorising her, upon being manumited by her master, to give bond & security ... never to become a charge as a pauper upon any County in this state, and remain in the state, with such privileges as other free persons of color enjoy."

Result: Referred to committee.
