Petition #11483723

Abstract

Thomas Crutcher represents that "some years since he purchased a negro woman slave named Temperance and that she has been an industrious and faithful servant." He further acknowledges that "he promised her that whenever she refunded to him the purchase money he would free her." Crutcher notes that "he is ready to fulfill his promise," but he cites that "the laws of this State requires that Slaves manumited shall not reside within the state." Stating that said Temprance "will apply to your honorable body for a law permitting her to reside in the state after she is liberated from slavery," the petitioner therefore "humbly prays that you may grant her the privilege she asks for."
