Petition #11484952

Abstract

Three representative of "a large meeting of Delegates convened in the Town of Greenville" ask for additional state aid for the East Tennessee and Virginia Railroad. Among various arguments, they assert that the benefits from said enterprise "would certainly flow from the successful achievement of this great work, to result to the citizens of this section" as well as to "the citizens of the whole State, as individuals; because the principle, fixed by our Constitution, upon which the revenues of the State are to be levied upon Real and slave property, ensures to the Public Treasury its full share of these benefits; for who shall undertake to say that the Real estate of this extensive region will not increase in value one hundred percent the moment the road shall be put in operation."
