Petition #11485114

Abstract

Forty-four stockholders of the Duck River Slack-Water Navigation Company ask the legislature not to grant the loan sought by the company's president. They contend the project is not feasible and that "the sd Company has had about eighty slaves, besides a number of white mechanics, employed in sd work from about the 1st of May last to the present time and that sd company have not yet completed the first lock and dam when it was supposed that two locks and dams would have been completed in that time." They suggest that said project "cannot be completed in ten years and at a cost less than $500,000." They therefore "again pray your Honorable body not to lend the aid and credit of the state of Tennessee to a work which facts demonstrate to be impracticable and which must prove a failure."
